  • Squad Leading, Field Upgrades, and You.

One of the thing's that's new to BF4 is Field Upgrades. These replace the perks from BF3. A Field Upgrade is a set of four bonuses or boosts to your character. The first boost in sequence is always active, and the other three are filled up by getting squad points. This is why it's so incredibly important for a squad to stick together and work together, and so important for the squad leader to mark the current objective. The added points are nice, but the real reason is to make each of the soldiers in a squad more effective. So remember, as SL always keep your squad together and update the attack marker to fill up that field upgrade bar. Each kit has two kit specific paths, and there are three general paths. I'm going to go over the three general ones here.

    Offensive Sprint>Ammo>Grenades> Reduced Fall

Pretty simple. If you get it maxed out, your guy will be faster, have more ammo, one extra nade, and take fall damage less.

    Defensive Armor>Cover>Flak>Quick Regen

You get extra chest armor. Which means sniper rifles and shotgun slugs will not be one hitting you in the chest. You get supressed less, you take less damage from explosives, and the health regen kicks in faster.

    Shadow Quick Unspot>Sprint>Reduced Fall>Stealth

This is a very powerful one when maxed out. Quick Unspot lowers the time you're spotted on the map by two seconds. Sprint and Reduced Fall are self explanatory. Stealth is the big gun. If you get this tree maxed out, you will only show up on motion sensors if you sprint. Hard to overstate how deadly that can be.

Re: Squad Leading, Field Upgrades, and You.

    Just a few notes:

First, you can still get one shot on our server with defensive armor in the chest. The damage modifier is .93 for wearing armor, same as the modifier for being shot in the stomach or leg. Right now the server is on 85 health, so any shot with a regular sniper at 41m and closer will one shot to the chest even with armor.

Second, we don't have auto-healing on, so Quick Regen seems useless. It doesn't have any effect on medkit healing, right? Anyone confirm this?

Third, shadow is pretty nice if the minimap is using spotting. As the indicated direction that the admins seem to want to take this is to remove minimap spotting, probably much less useful (though disappearing on the map does have its benefits).

Fourth, it's important to note that the lower tier rewards are worth more than the later ones. You'll always be able to sprint fast with offensive, but you'll only occasionally be able to fall farther. That's really necessary to take into account.

I just started playing commander and am having fun with it. I love upgrades because it's instant gratification for the squad. When someone does good work on a flag I always try to give an upgrade
