  • Percision Movement Drills Tonight w. E-Male

I will be running a "Special Ops" squad in an isolated teamspeak channel (for squad members only) and practising squad leading, old school 1stMIP style.

I'll also be videotaping the whole affair.

1stMIP style is not everyone's cup of tea (and I am not the best example of it), but hope in my squad tonight if you are ready and willing to try something a bit different.

I have no idea if this will work . . .

We had a lot of fun tonight. It's interesting getting 4 guys together with 4 different styles of play, all trying to apply sound strategy. I would like playing this way every night.

I thought it went very well even though I was far from my sharpest (too tired).

I tried the two fireteam approach, which paid off. Asked seriousturtle to take point and had one fireteam work the flag and one provide spawn and suppression fire.

Serious turtle provided clear and concise orders, and more than once we maintained formation while advancing, and at other times did a great job holding the line.

Everyone followed and stayed close to their fireteam leaders, although we need to work on clear designation of a fireteam leader, and their role. Two fireteam squads are challenging, and we managed it well.

Next practice will focus on some basic standard operating procedures, which I will document in this forum.

            Videos to follow.

Re: Percision Movement Drills Tonight w. E-Male

I was too tired to be much a squad leader last night, but did get in a bit of practice and then basically gave the squad over the seriousturtle's direction.

It has been a few years since I was regularly SLing, so I too need practice . . .

Looking forward to the next session.

I will start each practice by taking the squad aside and going over some basics before we jump into the line of fire.

Tonight the practice will focus on fireteam movement and cohesion.

You can request to join my practice squad (when it is running) via teamspeak, and I'll rotate individual's into the squad between maps.

Training will focus on one or two elements at a time in any given session.

Last night's training video is here.

Re: Percision Movement Drills Tonight w. E-Male

I landed into E-Males cohesion squad by accident last night and found the play style fun. Had a little trouble understanding the orders as I'm hard of hearing to begin with and can not understand much with all the shooting, explosions, hollering and crying going on! It was tuff for me to just stay put with the squad as a lot of red squirrels kept showing up on the minimap!

This is playing style should be easy for anyone in the tactical gamer mentality. One person should speak up and say he is going to be the squad leader for that round. The kits should be called out and first forward position should be declared. After that it just a matter of keeping track of your squad mates and q-spotting targets for death.

Got mixed feelings about splitting up the squad into two components. Hard enough for one man to lead a squad effectively and direct the squad without worrying about whats going on in an area you can not see. Close cummincations would have to be a must! You would have to have guys that play together alot to be able to recognize the other by voice which I can only do with a select few players, E-Male and Zhohar being an example of unique voice patterns.

Anyway, thumbs up E-Male for trying this out. Had fun! :)

makes me want to buy the damn game and join up...Keep threatening to do that...don't I. Maybe some Xmas money will have to go to that end.

@ Old Gunney...The two fire team approach in this BF2 style game is hugely effective if carried out with any sort of consistency and proficiency. The challenge comes with players rotating in and out at various times which leads to a hit or miss kind of result. If everyone on the team knows their role and sticks to it without variance you'll be the most feared squad on the battlefield.

I was not at my best last night, and aside from the initial moments, my actually SLing was very minimal.

As to the volume, I turned my in-game sounds way down so voices on teamspeak dominate. Clear communication is essential.

The two fireteam squad structure is very challenging, but a blast when it goes well.

Your job in the fireteam will be to stay with your fireteam leader.

The fireteams actually make the squad leader's job a bit easier, as it reduces the number of command subjects to two -- Alpha and Bravo.

Alpha is the SL's fireteam and acts in a supporting role (generally), and either the SL or Bravo teamleader will direct the actions of Bravo.

It will become clear with practice, and eventually second nature.

When communications are done right, we do not rely on voice recognition. Commands will flow to fireteams (Bravo advance to next cover...) or specific individuals (OldGunney, hold your position).

Comms are keep clear by having most information flow through either Alpha or Bravo leaders to the fireteam units.

We cannot hold drills in all these areas in any one practice session, but we will deal with them all regularly.

The main thing to understand is everything changes when you are in the Precision Movement Drill Squad (it needs a better name . . .)!

I had a lot of fun playing with you guys last night. Since I'm relatively new to online FPS gaming I have never really played like this, and it was great to participate in a fireteam approach.

Props to E-Mail for putting this together.

Also, I would love to see OldGunney as a Squad Leader :)

I agree with Gunney that I also am not used to a two fire-team approach. I would prefer a 4 man squad with one leader, thus having 2 medics at most times. But I am up for learning new things. There were a few maps where the objective was to hold one flag, letting the rest of the team to try to take the other flags. Boys, we held Charlie well, and it was fun. Gunney, I agree with Emale and turn down my ingame sounds, in order to hear TS better, or else I wouldn't understand a lick of it. I would also like to see Gunney lead a squad, and Xianz did great, considering that he didn't have a working mic. But he was always willing to do what needed to be done, and communicated as best he could with squad chat. Boys, this practice was more fun than typical playing for me, because I wasn't as much concerned with those usual annoyances, but instead focused on our tight squad play. See you on the battlefield.

I like the fireteam style play, but with such a small squad size in BC2 and the smaller team sizes, trying to have one fireteam of only two people break through a well-defended area can sometimes be much harder then simply charging with all four. I will say though that in really small fights, like 8v8 twl matches, splitting the squad works very well.

There is flexibility with fireteams. The second Alpha member can be assigned to Bravo when desired.

Also keep in mind that a squad seldom is acting in a sector entirely on its own. What tactics and force is used will depend on the situation.

What it comes down to is that I am not interested in always playing as a loose collection of people charging targets.

I am far more interested in seeing how a disciplined squad can move and function in the BC2 environment.

This is not eveyone's cup of tea (as noted last night when someone accused me of being a hypocrite because I would not attack the flag in the same manner as they did. Very curious.).
