  • Cold War Frustration

Yesterday I happen to be playing on the TG server when the Cold War map came up. I've played this before and didn't see anything wrong with the map but yesterday one thing came became painfully clear. If you are the attacker and don't make an initial forward progress with squads, then you are doomed IF the other side decides to take out the trees.

Someone on the heavy Machine gun emplacement must have taken out all the trees on the mountain side denying the attackers any cover. We were open season for defenders just standing down there spotting and shooting us as we came down off the slopes. It was very frustrating and disappointing to spawn in and die trying to make some kind of headway. Many on my side were clearly upset!

Yeah, I know, shooting down the trees is part of the game play. But seriously, can a Heavy Machine gun really take down a tree in real life? I don't think the map designers thought of that issue when thy put it out for use. We may see a change in the next patch.

Smoke grenades, medics and Tanks for cover and support is really the only way to brute force your way through a tough open pass like that.

Played this map on a random server the other day - the attackers were doomed from the start from the very things listed here.

The map, IMO, is just knocking down as many buildings as possible on the attack - that's all there is to it, in my opinion. If you can dislodge the enemy from 2nd and 3rd stories, it's grueling, but doable.

Honestly think this is a poorly designed map.

Tanks? There were no tanks being airlifted down with us that I could see! Yeah, smoke grenades could have been useful if anyone had thought to bring them.

Yeah, smoke it up. Too many people rely on the "kill stuff" grenade launcher.

I've found smoke invaluable and can make/break that push you need to make that game changing move. Watch out for your team/squad that just sits behind the smoke not knowing what to do just waiting for it to clear.

You smoke and move your arse up quickly. It's to cover your maneuver.

An AK47 can take out a tree in real life, so yes, a heavy machine gun could as well.

                        Possible, but not trivial.

Granted, that was a fairly large tree, but...

one of the things that I figured out about that map is, that if you drop down to the left, you can run behind the mountain with a light weight kit. doing this and only showing your self for a split second to reset the 10 sec curtain timer, you can almost get all the way behind that one story house across from the A mcom.

I had actually made it around that side and was behind their defenses at one point Nomad, but my squad failed to spawn on me. After waiting about a minute I spotted one enemy crossing to the right at 90 degrees at about 20 feet and I could not hold back the temptation to shoot him with my M60. Seemed like it would have been an easy killed, but all it must have done was tickle him. He turned and shot me with an aug. My terrible ping rate makes it very difficult to gain any amount of kills unless I'm throwing nades or using a shotgun!

                              Re: Cold War Frustration

Any map that I can kill tree's on and make it like shooting fish in a barrel I do my darnedest to make happen. For example, on Port Valdez, I run immediately for the Heavy MG and start mowing down tree's. Port Valdez is nearly impossible to win on the first set of objectives if there are no trees.

Of course, the response to this is kill A with tanks and mortar strikes and then kill B from the pipes with RPG's. However, you must keep watch on the hill so the enemy cannot run up the hill and shoot your guys on the pipes.

Tree's are pretty crucial in terms of cover. Without them, you must have a few players using smoke and recon balls.

Get 2-3 guys shooting smoke grenades and 1-2 throwing recon balls. You can break any defense with that.
