  • Hardcore Mode?

No Crosshairs. No Minimap. More Lethal Weapons. No Kill Cam. No Regen Health. All Skill.

What do you think about it? Will it fit into TG? Should we bother with it?

I'd personally vote for a server that's able to switch modes upon each map load, so that we can have one server with multiple maps/modes. No sense in being prejudiced against something until we know how it works.

      Re: Hardcore Mode?

I agree too.. even if I don't like the idea that EA introduces 'two modes' of gameplay.

My only worry is, if hardcore mode does work, then there will be people who prefer normal, and people who prefer hardcore. The possibility of a distinct divide between soldiers with different playing styles actually puts me off from getting a pre-order.

I mean, when it comes down to it, TG is tactical. No minimap? How are you supposed to make strategic/tactical decisions? I hope that hardcore mode doesn't cater solely to rambos.
It might be too drastic of a difference to definitively say, "One mode is better than the other".

I think you'll find that the difference in the two modes will be about the same as the two modes in the COD games. No reason to put off a pre-order. :D

Just to remind you, BF2142 comes with Titan mode.

              Re: Hardcore Mode?

I just watched the gameplay video from fileplanet. It looks pretty good. Most of the stuff for hardcore mode I could get by without except the mini map. I'd get lost without a map to show me where I have to go.

Looking at the video the mini map isn't that bad. It seems the map only shows enemies that your side is aware of. I hope there are options to turn on or off specific bits on the server side instead of just a straight up hardcore / no hardcore mode.

I just noticed we got a Bad Company forum now... :D

I am pretty excited for this game, on my priority list for next year. Hardcore mode seems alright, can't really form an opinion of it until I play it myself. I wonder how vehicles will be in that mode? Maybe 2 rockets to take on out/1 rocket to the rear? Or just no vehicles altogether?

                  Re: Hardcore Mode?

I never enjoyed more lethal weapons, no crosshair and no minimap over the otherway around. Lethal weapons being the fact bothering me most.

I know TG usually favors more realistic way, but we will see how much this limits teamplay/squadplay in general, or if it forces it more.

                    Re: Hardcore Mode?

Let me just state something before I start my rant:
I love 2142's fast paced gameplay. I love PR's slow paced gameplay. I would hate PR speed in 2142. I would hate 2142 speed in PR. I play the game as the game is designed; no sense undoing the developers work. If there is a glaring issue (gunship as transport, HAT sniping), then implementing rules to police this behavior is perfectly acceptable.

As someone who did play COD4 when it first came out here, let's not make the same mistakes and ruin a potentially awesome title (making COD4 and COD4/PR/Waiting game hybrid).

The game says its coming in two modes, awesome. Let's not take that and run with "Oh, change this, and tweak that to make this different," etc. Too many changes ended up making COD4 completely unenjoyable unless you were wholeheartedly onboard for slow matches in a game engine that favored fast gameplay.

Based on what the past Bf games have been like, the non-hardcore/standard game is where TG will want to sit. Its what TG has done in the past. Any other types of changes have come in the form of PR, etc.

That said, I'm excited to see what hardcore mode brings to the table. I always find gamemodes like this interesting, but when too many other changes are thrown in, it becomes unenjoyable.

Someone brought up the idea of 2 servers, one standard and one hardcore. It seems like an easy solution, but sorta makes it easy to have a split in the community, which could make things go awry.

                    _______________

TG should approach this as another BF game; only implementing the most basic changes (squad kick, UCB camping, etc). For the "PR" gameplay, I'd imagine we will see another implementation of the mod when BF3 rolls out.

                      Re: Hardcore Mode?

Hardcore mode, at least from the COD4 perspective, wasn't bad, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. When playing on a server that prohibited run n gun (Those annoying players that bunnyhop around spraying everything with HMGs) the game mode was intense and required you to use your eyes instead of relying on wall-hack info gadgets. If you got a 3-man kill streak, you got a UAV for 30secs... encouraging you to play smart and stay alive, instead of running around like an idiot in the open.

Of course, the scale of the maps in BF:BC2 seem to be much larger than those in COD4, and I would imagine that it might become easy to get lost without a static minimap. Then again, when does anyone ever get lost on Belgrade? We all know it like the back of our hand. Give it a few months and I'm sure the minimap loss will not even be such a blow to gameplay, instead forcing you and your squad to set up vantage points and ambushes to take out an otherwise unseen enemy.

I'll await judgment on this until I play it. It has potential I must admit. Though I am a fan of mini-maps and crosshairs. :) Call me a heathen.

I cannot wait for the beta in Dec.

                          Re: Hardcore Mode?

Good to see this board come up.

I think if we were able to implement a server which could switch game modes from map to map it would yield a dynamic, and consequently fun, server rotation. We all know from playing the same maps over and over in 2142 that a static map rotation can take a good bit of fun and adventure out of any game. Battlefield ships with multiple game modes to provide its players with variety; to run separate servers with ONLY one mode when there is the option to run one server with both modes, is in my opinion a misuse of a interesting resource given to us by the game.

I also agree with the fear of "splitting" the com unity, as stated above. Which is a major reason I support one server with a duel nature. (for the moment, anyway)

                              Re: Hardcore Mode?

just to add a few things to this,

                              Unlocks = ranked servers

BC2 seems to be a very heavily unlock orientated game like 2142, which means people will only play on ranked servers
Or at least we can assume that for the vanilla game, and ranked servers means little room to tweek settings eg map bleed or whatever
The hardcore mode may be different, maybe not unlock dependent (unranked servers), but probably (means ranked servers)

                              2 squad game modes

EA have stated there are two undisclosed game modes that are squad orientated
It is unknown how these will interact with vanilla or hardcore modes
