I would like to see them travel a certain distance without arming.
Such an obvious, simple fix that would make the GL what it is supposed to be: a long range tool for hitting walls people are behind or destroying stationary weapons emplacements. So tired of getting noob tubed.
You think it's bad now, wait until everyone has the extra grenades unlock.
I'm ok with it myself. This is Battlefield, and before 2142 PKs there were BF2 GLs. It's consistently been a big part of the game, for good or bad.
Long term I think it will settle down. There are just so many guns and as we unlock more there will be weapons people migrate to. For now the selection is so limited, the number of GLs on weapons is at an all time high.
Keep in mind when BF2 came out the grenade launcher was the same and so was squad switching while dead. Dice fixed this by adding a 20m no explode to the launcher and made it so you had to be alive to switch squads.
If fired within 10m or so it is simply a projectile, so if it directly hits you it will kill you. It also destroys walls and things at that range, but not nearly as well as if it actually exploded.
I already have the extra 'nades unlock, and spamming these onto a squad of medics is absolutely hilarious. If you have two assaults throw down ammo hubs next to each other you can pretty much resupply yourself with them as fast as you can reload and fire them.
The OP is right, expect to get tubed often.
