  • BF3 Positive Thinking

Since the other BF3 thread is technically about getting access to the BF3 beta via MOH:LE pre-order, I figured it's better served to create a new thread about the possibilities of BF3. Although, I'm not even sure if it belongs in this forum.

Like everyone else here, I enjoy BC2, but let's be honest, it isn't BF2/2142. I do like the gameplay, it has the feel of a console port, and a lot of the features that made BF2/2142 what they were are absent in BC2: large maps, mods, commanders, comm rose, VoIP (?!?), etc. The good news is that the DICE does acknowledge this.
Firstly, you must understand Bad Company 2 was never a "true" Battlefield game, so it's not fair to assume this is the direction DICE will be heading in, at least on PC. Series associate producer Barrie Tingle has said, "Battlefield Bad Company 2 is NOT a sequel to Battlefield 2 or 2142; it is a sequel to Battlefield Bad Company and as such the list of features matches that of the original game and not that of past Battlefield games." In other words, it was always intended as an offshoot, not a monster, flagship title like previous games have been.
Based on early reports, things look pretty good for the PC version of BF3. First of all, it's designed primarily for DX11. This good news for the BF3 PC since consoles support DX9. To top it off, it's optimized for 64-bit.
Firstly, we learn via Twitter from DICE rendering architect Johann Andersson the engine BF3 is built on -- Frostbite 2.0 -- is "primarily developed for DirectX 11"; XP and DX9 won't be supported (though you may be able to hack it). Also the engine will be especially optmized for 64-bit -- thankfully a lot of you have chosen the road less travelled. Good news in itself, but since consoles only support DX9, the implication is the PC version will be a "true" PC game.
I'm not trying to rally the troops and say BF3 is going to be awesome. I too am trying to keep my expectations grounded to avoid being disappointed. All I'm saying there's hope that this will be a good true sequel to the BF series, and signs point to the fact that the DICE is aware of the PC community - plus the fact that they know Bad Company 2 PC is different from what the true Battlefield series, so we can assume that BF3 will not be a slightly better version of BC3.

    Good points.

The key for me getting on board with BF3 is going to be whether or not it represents an evolutionary leap from BF2.

Think about the differences between 1942 and BF2 - that's the kind of leap I'm talking about. I don't think anyone of us could have imagined playing a game like BF2 when we were running around on El Alamein in 2002.

I am already not happy with DX9 being left behind. As it stands, DX 10 and DX 11 don't seem to offer much tangible extras to warrant the cost of the cards and the cost of less FPS. But I guess we will have to wait and see how the whole thing pans out.

What surprises me the most about BF3 is that we still have no idea as to what era the game will be in. Is anyone seriously considering purchasing the MOH Limited Edition just to see what the beta might be like?

While I'm hoping for the same thing, I wouldn't call the jump from BF2 to 2142 an evolutionary leap either. For the most part, it's the same game, set in the future (with Titans), and condensed classes. Nontheless, despite the lack of a huge leap, 2142 remains my favorite BF game.

          I'm not 100% sure (99%, I guess), but everything I've heard is that it's a modern setting like BF2.

Never going to buy that game ;)

Frostbite 2.0 eh, I suppose that means BF3 will feature a destructible environment? Maybe it will be a modern setting with a Walker from 2142 added in (I can hope!).

When BF2 came out it pushed the envelope by introducing squads and squad voip and spawn on squad leader
I choose to be optimistic and say the BF3 will be good and fun and teamplay, the way TG love it !

XP is old tech....everyone owned it because it was the first halfway decent OS from Microsoft that didn't crash, while I do agree the difference between DX9 and DX10 is nothing massive. If it's a matter of just loving XP thats stopping all Xp users from moving on they need to let go. Anything XP did or does Win 7 does better. I rode the XP train for 9 years and am a very happy camper since I boarded the new, sleek, Win 7 train. With win 7 comes DX10 and 11.....no biggie. ANd it's cost is very reasonable.

I just hope they let they boys mod it out. Give it to greasymullet for a little bit and persuade the hell out of him to make a Carpathian Mountain type map. For those of you that missed out or are missing out on PoE2 Carpathian Mountains was IMO the best map ever.

I think we might be jumping to conclusions assuming that BF3 beta keys will be handed out exclusively to MoH players. After all, the MoH beta had multiple points of entry. I don't have much experience with betas, any thoughts?

I had the same thought Unload. Why not a conversion feature where all past bf titles could have destructible environments.

I am already not happy with DX9 being left behind.
If they dont have to cater or be restricted by dx9 they can focus on dx10 and all the work savings it supposedly has. Its actually a real positive if it were dx10 only however since its on console also I dont see that being the case

                            Go to 2.30min and listen:

                            then there is this:
                            http://www.thatvideogameblog.com/wp-...d3PcGamer3.jpg

All in all the game has the following:

                            * Powered by “Frostbite DX”
                            * Set in year modern day (just like BF2, ed.)
                            * Will ship with 8 maps, each supporting up to 40-players per team
                            * Two playable factions, NATO and MEC (Middle Eastern Coalition)
                            * Same “ticket-based” gameplay style as before
                            * Maps are mostly urban, based in Middle East
                            * Squads and Commanders are present, introduced are “Battalions” which consist of three to four squads.
                            * Five playable classes; Sniper, Assault, Engineer, Medic and Support
                            * Will feature 48 different vehicles (24 for each faction)
                            * Will feature 34 different weapons (17 for each faction) and another 22 unlocks (for both factions), in total 56 different weapons.
                            * Other unlocks include different types of ammunition, body armor, helmets, camouflage and accessories.
                            * Online stats tracking, awards and “real world ranks”
                            * “Soldier” feature, looks like MMO-styled characters and avatars
                            * Ranked servers will be available for resellers weeks before the game ships (for testing, apparently, ed.)
                            * In-game replay and recording feature
                            * VoIP, friends list, in-game IM-client and “extensive clan support”
                            * Built-in auto software updater (no more patches!, ed.)
                            - Frostbite 2 game engine running DX11
                            - Won't be as system resource heavy as previous Battlefield's (by ratio)

If you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have obviously failed to plan properly.

Ahh, I forgot about that info...considering it has been a year since it came out :p
I am still hopeful this game will be good, but I also hope that DX 11 cards will not constitute the minimum. I don't feel like trading/selling my GTX 275 any time soon.
