  • PnkBstrB, good Gawd ya, what's it good for?

Was playing in a game a few days ago, and noticed my gameplay was way down. Game controls were laggy and frame rate was low. Did an Alt Tab Del out to check on system process and noticed that one process PnkBstrB.exe was taking up 45% of my cpu time. Now I know why sometimes I get some terrible games from time to time.

Just what does PnkBstrB do and why does it run so long? Is it looking at hard drive directories for illegal porn? (I've had that removed!) Shouldn't take that long to see if I have any hacks running.

pnkbstrb is one of the services installed and run by punkbuster... I've never noticed it taking that many resources though!

This PunkBuster issue is really getting me down! Tried to Alt Tab out and take a screenshot of desktop showing my processes but it only showed what was on my BFBC2 video window. I find that if my ping goes up over 200, then I know PnkBstrB is running. This happens quiet a few times during a single game giving me terrible gameplay.

Is this because I am overclocking my CPU? Guess I'll turn off overclocking and see if that helps.

is your antivirus running while gaming? I know it sounds silly, but there are confirmed reports of conflicts between PnkBstrB and antivirus programs.

Try updating PunkBuster first - http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?page=pbsetup.php

Check the FAQ, it has some notes on antivirus and things that might interfere - http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php...aq-generic.php

Thank you Fallen, I've sent in a request to PunkBuster for some help on this issue. Their web site says some of the troubles are stemming from Video cards, memory ram and virus software. I've changed my CPU, Motherboard and reinstalled with bare bones with no relief! Trying to get my memory ram cards changed with a different brand and higher speed. Could even be my Windows XP Professional op system which is a bootleg copy. Will post when or if it ever gets resolved by PunkBuster!

Re: PnkBstrB, good Gawd ya, what's it good for?

Got an E-Mail from Punkbuster Friday. They asked me to "Uninstall, install, then press the "Test Services" button. Copy-paste the entire output from the "Test Services" window in a new note." Did that and didn't see anything unusual. They will probibly get back to me Monday after looking at results. Hope they can fix this issue for me. Would like to play this game the way everyone else gets to see it.

I notice that usually right after I join the server I can play just fine, but after a minute things slow down. I can tell as soon as in game ping goes up I can see a slow down in framerate and player control response. If I Alt Tab out I can see from the Windows task Manager that PnkBstrB is running like a big dog!

At least you can still play Gunney, I started having a problem with PnkBstrB.exe today as well, of course it happened during our first ladder match. My kick said the usual punkbuster time out followed by - Restriction: Service communication failure PnkBstrB.exe, initialization failed. If anyone has had something similar would appreciate any feed back. I will also be starting a ticket with evenbalance. Will post any answers I get from them.

Just an update on my PnkBstrB issue. I noticed that today on two different empty servers that PnkBsterB process starts at the 4 min 20 sec mark after game starts. THen it just keeps on running degragating my gameplay and frame rate. Was just standing in a guard tower on Harvest on our server watching when my frame rate goes down and I saw that about 4min 20sec the frame rate went down from 65 to 38 and bounced around low after that.

While cruising the EA forums I came across one post complaining about PknBstrB decreaseing frame rate and one poster suggested trying the following link:

                    http://mion.faireal.net/BES/

I dl it and it's a small unility that limits programs running in the backgraound from taking up a lot of CPU time. I've been using it and it works great for me! No more game lag for me! FPS stays up high and game controls stay the same all the way through game. I'm really happy now. Now when I replace my dual core with a quad, you guys will be in big trouble!

On a side note, noticed that I am no longer being plagued by PnkBstrB running in background slowing down my gameplay. Don't know why it's stopped, but glad it has! Guess I was on PunkBuster bad boy list for awhile.
