  • Targeted Killing: When pragmatism and international law collide

Targeted Killing: When pragmatism and international law collide

"Killing a man is murder unless you do it to the sound of trumpets." ~ Voltaire

The sources, methods, goals and tactics of identifying legitimate targets for covert action, are matters typically hidden from public scrutiny, yet clearly worthy of public attention and philosophical debate. The following of unequivocal ethical criteria when identifying targets is necessary to minimize blowback when conducting Targeted Killing Operations. Comparable to torture and rendition, the debate that encompasses these operations have passionate supporters on both sides of the issue. In spite of the genuine controversy surrounding this subject, a carefully circumscribed policy of targeted killing can be a legal and effective tool in a counter-terror campaign.

It is necessary to provide a coherent and acceptable definition of both assassination and targeted killing in order to form a common frame of reference when debating the pertinent moral and legal arguments for and against targeted killing. First, we must differentiate the current US policy of targeted killing from the common understanding of “assassination.” In asymmetric warfare determining combatant vs. non-combatant status is a critical task to any operation. Discerning between these two designations may initially seem effortless, however, in an asymmetric environment these distinctions only come in shades of grey. Throughout the paper, we will examine the arguments for and against targeted killing. Subsequently, I propose policy guidelines to that must be considered in order to minimize blowback when conducting Targeted Killing Operations....

  • Brink Preview

    Brink Preview

Today I'd like to present Brink, a brand new first person shooter set in the near future on the man made island "The Ark". The Ark is a green nuts dream, designed as a completely self sufficient floating man made city, it was supposed to be paradise. Now the global environmental crisis is real, threatened with rising sea levels, thousands of refugees have swarmed to the ark as their last hope. You the player get to choose one of two sides; the Security forces trying to sustain some form of law and order, or the Resistance fighting for what they believe is there fair share of the resources.

One of the cool and interesting features in Brink is "SMART", Smooth Movement Across Random Terrain. What Bethesda has tried to do is make the limitations of modern fps go away. If you see it you can go over, under or around it in a smooth quick progression. In practice the game blinds free-running with fps game-play. You can slide, jump, bounce off of or hurdle walls, or just run around like a monkey on crack, all the while enjoying everything you would find in an fps....

    Re: Arma TVT Event

The folks over at Armed Assualt would like all who have not participated yet, to our next tvt event. This will be a vanilla event so you don't need to worry about mods, just need Armed Assualt 2 + Operation Arrowhead, (also known as Combined Operations for those who bought them together) and make sure there patched up.

This event will feature some of the methodical ArmA TvT aspects that most players didn't even realize was possible. The joy of engaging enemy teams with suppressive fires and flanking under smoke, or the fear of moving through a village and hearing your opponents talking in hushed tones are you get close....

  • TG Ladders And Competition Return!

    TG Ladders And Competition Return!

We are pleased to announce to the TG Community the reactivation of the TG Competitions section! What this provides is a platform for Ladder Matches and Tournaments within and outside of Tactical Gamer. We will be hosting competitions for several titles here at TG, and more will be added as are needed or requested.

This will be mostly player run, I/E player formed teams and team issued challenges. For those familiar with Tactical Warfare League, it is a very similar setup. I will be overall in charge of the Ladder/Competition system as the League Admin and will have “Referee’s” for the different titles to help out as needed. For those interested in being a referee please PM me with a short bio and in your own words explain why you would like to be a referee.

The competitions will start running as soon as teams sign up and start issuing challenges. So, without any further banter from me, let’s explain some of the rules and SOP’s for our Tactical Gamer League:

Mount & Blade: With Fire and Sword

The boys and girls over at Taleworlds are at it again with their new game, Mount & Blade: With Fire and Sword. WFaS is the third installment in the Mount and Blade series, where you can play on foot or mounted and fight it out with swords, axes, arrows and a host of other weapons on the med-evil battlefield.

Mount & Blade: With Fire and Sword expands on this by taking the game forward to the 17th Century and the conflict in North Eastern Europe, and probable the biggest change, "firearms". Yes that right you get to add Muskets to all your hacking and slashing....

  • Project Reality Gamer Starts Learning ARMA II

Project Reality Gamer Starts Learning ARMA II

    Dichotomy of a Theme
Differences between Project Reality and ARMA II

I have been playing Project Reality at Tactical Gamer now for three and a half years. It has been a huge amount of fun, and the most realistic online game play I have ever experienced. There is just something special about it that you can't quite explain.

After playing ARMA II in earnest this week for really the first time after tinkering around with it for over a year, I began to think about it. I came to really see how very different ARMA II is from Project Reality, even though essentially they are the same type of game - first person modern warfare shooter. The differences go beyond just the game itself. They manifest in almost every area, right down to the people that play the titles.

It is interesting to scribe some of my observations on how the two games differ. For gamers that play both titles, it would be interesting to see how many out there have the same opinions. For players that don't play one or the other, this may be an interesting insight into a dichotomy on a theme - the first person shooter at Tactical Gamer.

I want to emphasize that these are my observations from playing hundreds of hours of Project Reality and tens of hours playing ARMA II, Operation Arrowhead on the Tactical Gamer Bravo Server. It is an opinion article on my perspectives as a very new ARMA II player. I am not commenting on future ARMA II developments and modifications (like PR for ARMA), as I have no knowledge of them. This is strictly my observations as a new ARMA II player coming from Project Reality in the present conditions of both games and communities....

  • MMO Gaming the TG Way: Eve Online

MMO Gaming the TG Way: Eve Online

Greetings everyone, [TG-18th] DamionRayne here with another article. This time focusing on MMO Gaming, and doing it the TG Way. So we'll get started with a game that TG used to have a presence with, and a game that is growing constantly and pushing the boundaries of MMO Development.

    What is Eve Online?
I'll be showing a few videos in this article to help explain to people what exactly Eve Online is, and what it offers to those that are looking to play it. In the technical sense Eve Online is a "Persistent Single Shared Universe, with Emergent and Non-scripted game-play." What does this mean in Layman's terms? This means that when you are playing Eve Online you are playing it with all of the 360,000+ subscribers that play the game as well.

This means that Eve Online is a game universe built around the principles of gameplay that isn't scripted, outside of course fighting NPC's for various reasons. This means that Eve Online is a social game in the truest sense of the word. In a game where every action you make has a consequence, it brings new meaning to this type of world....

  • TG / ArmA Resurgence

    TG / ArmA Resurgence

Our ArmA section here at Tactical Gamer has welcomed a resurgence the last couple of months. We've seen multiple events and a regular core of players is now on daily. TG/ArmA has also been cut to its basics. All you need to play now on our server is ArmA 2 + OA + ACE. This leaves it very open to new players who have been scared off by the amount of prep in the past. Along with this we have a new Game Officer: Dredge, and his new leaner and meaner admin team. Our missions development section has returned with a vengeance and you can expect many new and exciting missions available to play.

Now that we have a new GO, I wanted to get his vision of the future for TG/ArmA and where he thinks we are headed as a community. That being said I opened up the floor to the community and had them present several questions for him.......
