IMO it feels completely different compared to BF2. Most of the BF3 maps were clearly not designed for 64 players so they tend to degenerate into spamfests at a few key areas on the map. I don't think any of the maps can really compare in size to the BF2 maps, except for maybe Caspian Border. Lots of urban combat, twitch-based play. Rush mode is pretty fun, though. Implementing and executing team strategy is somewhat constrained by lack of commander and VOIP and smaller squad size, but we do have a teamspeak workaround; although we use it extensively for intra-squad communication, I've yet to see it used effectively for inter-squad, team-wide communication. Having said that, the game is still a lot of fun and will only get better in the future.
