As with PCs in general, the bigger you can go the better, naturally

Anything video card with 64 megs and up should do you, it might run a bit jerky or require lower resolutions on lower end systems. There is tons "hardware required" stuff on the web if you search. Post your specs.

    Re: Hl2 Help!!!

    what are you using now?
i've got the 9600 128mb and its fine.
although i do have one gib of ram and a 2800+ 64bit cpu

what cpu/mem/gfx card do you have?

also the game runs at different settings.. so if you are looking for the best settings its a bit different.

    Re: Hl2 Help!!!

I was running it with my GF3 Ti500 64mb and it ran smoothly with the settings on low. At the time, I thought it looked really good. Over the last two nights, however, I replayed the whole game with all the settings on high and I'm truly amazed at how much better it looks. Having the AA turned all the way up does a LOT for the appearance!

So, we should take that to mean your new video card was well worth the investment eh?

    Re: Hl2 Help!!!

as jackel said, what are you using now?

what is the "standard" resolution that you use? ie i have a TFT and really need to run games at 1280x1024 (though i cant with HL2......)

if its 1024x768, then any gfx card from about a 9600pro-9700pro speed will be fine. any higher i recommend 9800pro min. If you can stretch to a 6800 standard then it should be great at 1280x1024.

CPU wise, well, nothing much has changed in the past year the explosive increases in speed that we've been used to have not been coming this year. because of that AMD have a rather large lead in speed, and cos lately so its AMD ONLY unless you totaly mad and dont care about wasting money on a slower cpu, with less quality (a 90nm 3.6ghz Intel cpu will THROTTLE at full load in most pcs....call that quality? I call that a fake 3.6ghz)

if your going for a full system upgrade now, i recommend PCI express motherboard and graphics card too. since AGP will be will soon be brushed under the carpet.

    specs for "bottom" end:
    A64 3000 90nm 939 socket
    Asus A8N-E or Asus A8V-E *1
512mb or 1gig of Crucial ballistics or Corsair XLPT 3200. *2
    6800 *3
    onboard lan
    onboard sound
    Sata HDD.

specs for "mid" end (tho not the extremes):
    A64 3500 90nm 939 socket
    Asus A8N-E or Asus A8V-E *1
1gig of Crucial ballistics or Corsair XLPT 3200. *2
    6800gt or X800XL *3
    onboard lan
    Audigy 2????
    Sata HDD.

top end would have a ATI X850XT or X800XTPE in it, but thats if ATI have found a way of making them yet...........HAHA

*1 Nvidia or VIA? depends on your preference and how they perform but VIA chipsets are MUCH cheaper

*2 PC3200 with low latency (2-2-2) is much better than PC4400 (2.5-4-4) also need pairs of ram ie 512mb is 2x256 or 1gig is 2x512.......

*3 PCI express motherboard = PCI express GFX's

You should be fine for a utility-grade experience.

    Re: Hl2 Help!!!

yeah, a better vid card imo but its pretty fine. If you are going to upgrade get the game first, then see if you really need the upgrade.

    Re: Hl2 Help!!!

do i actually need steam to even PLAY hl2?

also, does it really make that much of a difference with a 64 mb compared to a higher amount?
