    hotmail accounts

How difficult are these to hijack for spam sending purposes?

I think mine is being used to send out spam, cause I got a message today from someone saying they are blocking my accout for all the spam they are getting frmo it.

I never had that before. Typically, they use really weird fake addresses for spam.

I been getting alot of undelieverable messages for messages I never sent out. That made me wonder.

Oh well it is a free account anyways and I changed the password so if someone had gotten access to it, they can't now.

They don't need to know the password. They will use your
address as the "return to" or "sender" so it looks like it came
    from you.
Any errors are then sent back to the "sender". Thus your inbox is full
    of crap like this.
    I do what I can.

I'm sure it'll pass with time once the spammer starts using another address. I used to get returned spam (ugh, second hand spam) but it stopped and now I get regular spam (ugh, unused spam). It's a good thing we have TG e-mail accounts that don't get spam.

People really get hundreds spam messages a day? I only get a couple. I didn't used to get any but then my clueless friend put my address into a website which would give you a free T-shirt if you gave them yours and 5 friends' email addresses. <sigh>

I got my first returned spam today.

TG uses a few things to restrict spam. A few choice RBL (realtime blackhole lists) enable us to simply ignore mail from sources already known to be spam producing or spam supporting. We also use authentcated SMTP to restrict the use of our mail server as an open relay to the outside world.

Before these things were put into place. I was getting several HUNDRED messages a day that were simply going into my spambox. Now I only get about 6-7.

I made the mistake once many years ago, before there was spam, of putting my work email address in a newsgroup posting. Now, I get more than 100 spam messages per day. It is absolutely ridiculous.
